'Underworld', a slick and stylish new horror film opened in the US and UK on 19th September. It hit the number one spot at the US box-office over its first weekend, taking over $20m. Concerning the conflict between vampires and werewolves, 'Underworld' is directed by Len Wiseman, produced by Lakeshore Entertainment, and stars Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. Framestore CFC designed and created the film's extraordinary digital VFX, completing over 150 shots, some 60 of which involved CG elements.

When the first horror films appeared, a vampire or a werewolf was such an exotic sight on the silver screen that a whole film could be made around the existence of just one of them. Fast-forward 70 years, and the mythos has become a little more sophisticated. Imagine a world in which there are families and clans of these creatures of the night. A world, furthermore, in which a war has been raging between the two species, unbeknownst to humans, for hundreds of years.

Welcome to 'Underworld'.

What the critics said:

"The special effects, set and costume designs are well done. I especially liked the werewolf morphing effect. It's really cool stuff."
Bloody-disgusting.com

"Underworld is a fantastic visual film... The film begins with a sort of promising shootout in a crowded subway... revealing its centrepiece werewolf transformation to be fairly nifty..."

"Impressive wirework and CGI-enhanced effects..."
Michael Elliott, Movie Parables

"It was a very dark movie, lots and lots of rain, it had a solid story, solid characters, cool werewolf transformations, some great fight scenes (especially the last twenty minutes of the movie) and some awesome whip and gun fights. Underworld kicked some major ass... I cannot think of a better werewolf movie in many years..."
